Corpse Knight 1

corpse knight 1

It’s 1429 in France. Young Foy and her father are farmers tending the fields to sell their crops in the nearby village. Foy has already lost her mother and has to rely on her father sharing memories to know more about her. Writer Michael Chaves establishes early on that the regional war is taking its toll on the villagers and there’s a general uneasiness and tension at play.

Foy’s father understands the need to ensure his daughter knows how to protect herself and teachers her how to use the bow and arrow. Seeing her frustration, he motivates Foy by telling her about the bravery of Joan of Arc and how she was sent by God, which even allowed her to resurrect the dead. That lesson comes just in time as bandits attack them out of the blue, killing her father.

When the bandits discover Foy is earning money by working the fields, they attempt to enslave her. Fortunately for Foy, her prayers get answered as her father returns to life albeit in a very different manner as her Corpse Knight. Chaves sets the stage beautifully by setting the stage and explaining the lore. He also adds a time crunch to the story as Foy needs to get her father to Joan of Arc to fully restore him back to life.

Artist Matthew Roberts and colorist Rico Renzi craft a beautiful world with expressive characters and detailed backgrounds. Renzi’s rich color choices fit in wonderfully with the fantasy style story.

Corpse Knight 1 is a fantastic opening chapter and with this premise it seems like it’s only going to get better. Don’t miss out on this one!
