GI Joe Sssilent Missions: Copperhead
This was the most jam-packed installment of any of the GI Joe/Cobra Silent Mission features yet. Artist/writer Howard Porter put an incredible level of storytelling into this spotlight on Copperhead, one of the inherently cool and criminally underutilized Cobra agents.
Copperhead takes on a daring assignment from Cobra Commander where he’s got to retrieve some special particles that looks like components to the MASS Device components in a fun nod to the first cartoon mini-series. After getting his payday, Copperhead proceeds to try and drink and gamble it all away. Porter clearly seems to have an affinity to the character as these traits were referenced in his original file card.
Before Copperhead can finish blowing through all of his money, he learns of a motorcycle race where he proceeds to be a menace to his fellow racers.

Upon reaching the finish line, he gets a tip about a major high-stakes contest playing out near a swampland where he gets to drink, play cards and brawls with a familiar face who would be right at home in the swamp. Porter has mastered packing pages with panels. At times this makes it challenging to make out what’s playing out in some of the smaller panels, but this ambitious style of storytelling works well with the no dialogue required gimmick.
Colorist Romulo Fajardo Jr. weaves in so many color combinations to complement the story and provide some clarity to the occasionally cramped panels.
Copperhead has always been a compelling character in concept, but Porter and Fajardo Jr. really showcase why he warrants a bigger spotlight. This was easily one of the strongest Silent Mission stories made even better because it didn’t feature an A-list character.
