Image Comics reviews 4/22/26 – Void Rivals 29, Corpse Knight 1
Void Rivals 29
Void Rivals 29 marks the penultimate installment of The Quintesson War. This has been an exhilarating arc with some wild twists and turns as the Agorrians and Zertonians have battled overwhelming odds. The Agorrians managed to turn the tide using the Energon, but the Quintessons still had an ace up their sleeve with the Tribunal. Now it’s up to Darak to risk it all in order to save his people from the savage onslaught of the Tribunal.
On Zertonia, the war effort is faring better since the Tribunal can only be on one planet at a time. Solila and Premiere Zalilak lead the offensive while Pythona seeks to reunite with her Cobra-La crew.
Writer Robert Kirkman maintains a breakneck pace through Void Rivals 29 juggling the numerous subplots on the war front smoothly. It never reads too chaotic while showing the ebbs and flows of the various forces fighting it out. Although the war is playing out, Void Rivals 29 has some fun character beats like Grakula introducing her new pet, Dukan bravely defying the odds leading the Agorrians against the Tribunal and Zerta Trion ready to be healed.
Void Rivals 29 boasts fantastic artwork from Andrei Bressan, who crafts dynamic action sequences while leaning into the differences of the various factions in battle. The Agorrians are stout trading mobility with power and force. The Zertonians are more nimble combatants who prefer more lithe movements on the battlefront. Tribunal is just an overwhelming force while Pythona and her Cobra-La troops fight in the shadows seeking to avoid being caught in the conflict.
Colorist Dee Cuniffe uses sharp, contrasting colors to better showcase Bressai’s detailed artwork. Letterer Rus Wooton always does his most creative work on Void Rivals as he can play around with a variety of fonts for the different creatures, people and tech objects along with his array of creative sound effects.
Void Rivals 29 ends on a familiar cliffhanger for Transformers fans with things looking especially bleak for the Agorrians and Zertonians. Hopefully for their sake, something will happen to light their very darkest hour.
