MOTU Masterverse New Etheria Hordak review (2025)

New Etheria Hordak definitely raises the boss bar for my Masterverse New Eternia/New Etheria collection. Mattel kinda got me with the Masterverse Revolution Hordak (available at Amazon), which was a solid figure, but this New Etheria Hordak is definitely more in line with the more elaborate, intricate current style for MOTU figures.

Skeletor got a tremendous figure in the New Eternia line. Let’s see if his master gets equally stellar treatment as he brings The Evil Horde to Etheria or if this is a figure worth keeping trapped in a portal.

Packaging: The Masterverse packaging is tops for retail lines. Even the WWE line can’t measure up to this consistent level of excellence.

For this one, New Etheria Hordak is emerging from a forest with the bats that make up the Evil Horde logo flying overhead. This main image starts on the front and continues on the left side. On the right side, there is the typical layout of a closeup of Hordak and a wide shot with him holding his staff and shield. There’s a special silver sticker indicating 40 years of She-Ra, which is wild.

Over on the back is a shot of New Etheria Hordak presumably standing in front of the prison cell in The Fright Zone. His bio explains Hordak was the force behind the incident that left New Eternia in shambles and he’s bringing the Horde with him to conquer New Etheria.

I really wish we had a series or a comic book to play all of this story out in greater detail.

Likeness: Hordak has gotten plenty of figures over the years, but this New Etheria version really does a spectacular job of conveying his menacing aura. He looks like the final boss.

His head sculpt is fantastic with plenty of details like small, raised bumps along the ridges and bat-like shape of his face. The deep-set eyes, flared nostrils and fangs in his slightly open mouth definitely make him look like a menace.

Hordak’s armor is has an intricate sculpt with his high neck collar piece and shoulder frames that resemble bones. It’s got slots of decreasing sides. The large bat looks fine even though some of the details on the head are somewhat soft. He’s got thin translucent bat wings on his back with really strong details.

Scale: Hordak has always been portrayed as is the same height as the rest of the Evil Horde. He lines up right alongside Mantenna and Mosquitor.

Paint: The Masterverse series has earned its reputation for being one of the more reliable mass market lines in terms of paintwork. It’s rare to find figures with sloppy paint applications.

Of course, that cues up the announcer’s jinx as Hordak has a few drops of red paint on his armor and a smear on the tip of his bat.

Articulation: Hordak has the usual 30 points of articulation. It’s limited a bit thanks to his chest armor though Hordak is more of a long-distance fighter so he doesn’t need that range much as some figures.

New Etheria Hordak has:

  • neck
  • ball-jointed shoulders
  • bicep
  • elbow (double-jointed)
  • wrist
  • wrist hinge
  • torso
  • waist
  • hip
  • thigh
  • knee
  • ankle

Accessories: Hordak has a staff with a dragon style bat wrapped around the upper portion.

He also has a swappable cannon arm attachment for when he’s launching a long-distance attack.

Finally, he’s got his shield in the shape of the Evil Horde logo. It’s got some cool texturing in the center portion. And you can absolutely count the wings since they’re removable as well.

Worth it?  I was able to get Hordak from a buddy who found this wave of Masterverse figures at Ross for $10. It’s really hard to beat that kind of value. Even at $25, this line is a fair value but it’s hard to top this price point.

Rating: 9.5 out of 10

Hordak was a figure the New Etheria line needed to knock out and they absolutely did. Some of the paint details are missing compared to other Masterverse takes on the Horde’s big bad, but this is an essential pick-up.

Where to Get It? The New Eternia figures have been pretty hard to find in stores. You can get New Etheria Hordak  from the case pack from Entertainment Earth and Amazon.
