Star Wars Maul: Shadow Lord – Night of the Hunted review S1 E6

Night of the Hunted was the most thrilling episode of Maul: Shadow Lord so far with some mesmerizing moments, an unrelenting chase and some very strong character work.

Lawson isn’t thrilled to see two fugitive Jedi hanging out in his kitchen, but it’s hard for him to be made at Rylee for wanting to help those in need. While he and Daki talk, Rylee chats with Devon in his room. Rylee is failing at keeping his cool here leading to an interesting thought. The Star Wars saga has shown how male Jedi react/respond to their stronger emotional connections to the opposite sex. Anakin didn’t ignore his feelings for Padme (with admittedly terrible results) while Obi-Wan pushed back his feelings.

One of the greater frustrations with the retconned-out Heir to the Empire continuity is that Luke Skywalker doesn’t marry Mara Jade, which shows a healthy Jedi marriage proving there can be a balance with emotions. The Jedi didn’t have to be monks to be protectors of the peace. Arguably this strict detachment to emotion is what led to the Jedi’s downfall in the first place.

Ahsoka followed in the monk/nun path of the other Jedi, but maybe there’s some potential with Devon? Order 66 is done and the Jedi are all but extinct so what would the harm be in Devon actually having a relationship with Rylee? She’s young and seemingly impressionable enough that she might at least entertain the notion of having an emotionally well-rounded life.

The conversations don’t get much longer to play out as Night of the Hunted truly gets started with Marrok’s arrival. Daki and Devon duel with him in the cramped apartment until Daki tells Devon to keep Rylee and Lawson safe, which in basically every action movie means Daki is about to catch the wrong end of Marrok’s lightsaber.

Night of the Hunted actually plays against tropes and just has him get incapacitated briefly leading to Devon to battle Marrok alone for a moment. She’s up to the challenge and Daki arrives to provide reinforcements long enough for them to get a Republic gunship and get away…temporarily.

The gunship gets shot down and they’re back on the run again. This is proving to be a long night of the hunted.

Back at police headquarters, Two-Boots had been impressed with the efficiency of the Empire at handling all the chaos playing out in Janix right up until Lawson pops up on wanted posters. And just to be an authoritative tool, Blake tells Two-Boots to lose his non-regulation boots. That’s Two-Boots’ whole gimmick, man!

Realizing the situation is bleak with his newly minted outlaw status, Lawson goes to his pal, Rheena, at her casino for help getting transport off the planet.

Maul is pleased to know Devon hasn’t left Janix. Since Vario held up his end of the deal, Maul says he’s free to go. Vario properly considers the situation and decides sticking with Maul over taking his chances with the Empire is the better move. Maul sets off to help Devon. It says a lot about Night of the Hunted that this episode can be so engaging with Maul largely sticking to the shadows.

Stormtroopers arrive at the casino forcing Lawson and Daki to get involved. While they hold them off, Devon and Rylee escape to Janix’s lower levels and get onto a train. That was a solid escape plan if only Marrok hadn’t anticipated it and is closing in on them on the train. Devon wasn’t eager about this rematch with Marrok so soon especially with Daki occupied at the casino.

She gets some unexpected help as Maul arrives to battle Marrok. This Night of the Hunted clash feels like a big deal and the tunnel sequence looked incredible with dual red blades, the flash of blue from Devon’s saber and the orange lighting of the tunnel.

As the fight is still playing out to a standstill, Devon severs the connection preventing Marrok from following. While that temporarily derailed (sorry) Marrok’s pursuit, he does call his master to let him know about Maul and Jedi being on Janix.

Night of the Hunted brought some real clashes and a fun, tense chase that didn’t let up until the credits. Now that Maul has come to Devon’s aid how will this affect her thoughts on the former Sith Lord?
