Greenland 2 Migration review (2026)

As far as apocalyptic end of the world disaster movies go, Greenland 2 Migration goes hard.

It never lets up. Even in those seemingly quiet moments it’s just a setup for the next big cataclysmic scene. This film is an experience that’s all about leaving the viewer breathless and it absolutely delivers.

Think of Greenland 2 Migration as a hybrid of A Quiet Place and 28 Days Later. Considering the 2020 original film was such an unexpected surprise, it’s pretty impressive that the sequel successfully manages to up the stakes without just feeling like a retread of what worked previously.

It’s been five years since the world effectively came to an end. John Garrity (Gerard Butler), his wife, Allison (Morena Baccarin) and son, Nathan (now played by Roman Griffin Davis) are part of a small contingent of survivors who were selected to be placed in an emergency shelter before a devastating comet crashed down onto the planet.

Over the course of the five years, the survivors’ resources are naturally getting depleted, but part of the leadership council still wants to take in those outside the shelter looking for sanctuary. Decidedly putting the safety of everyone at the Greenland facility in jeopardy, John — one of the few engineers capable of fixing the deteriorating equipment — goes out on scavenger missions in search of supplies. Those excursions come with their own risks including radiation exposure, atmospheric lighting strikes or the occasional comet fragment shower pelting the Earth.

Ric Roman Waugh (Angel Has Fallen) returns to direct Greenland 2 Migration keeping the team intact with screenwriter Chris Sparling, who’s joined by Mitchell LaFortune. The filmmakers don’t waste the 98-minute runtime and quickly set up the big conflict for Greenland 2 Migration. As the title would imply, the Garrity family has to get on the move thanks to their sanctuary no longer being much of a safe haven.

Good thing that other members of the council, Dr. Amina (Amber Rose Revah, The Punisher), and Shaw (Trond Fausa), have already started considering alternative locations. They can use that foresight provided the group can make it in the wake of a mass exodus from the Greenland site. Waugh knows disaster movie fans get their thrills from the spectacle. Greenland 2 Migration offers plenty starting with this desperate escape sequence, the depravity of the once formerly tight community fighting to get on lifeboats and a devastating tsunami that hits the site and leaves few survivors.

Eventually, the group makes it to Liverpool where power struggles for sanctuary are far more pronounced. Amina has heard rumors of a revitalized area in France that’s sparking the start of a planetwide resurgence. Getting there proves treacherous as the group has to contend with natural disasters as well as unhinged guys with guns.

Waugh comes up with some creative potential death traps for the group including comet fragment strikes, ambushes on a seemingly quiet path, rope and ladder bridges that immediately seem like a bad idea to try and cross as well as a battleground. There’s a tangible sense of danger around every corner throughout Greenland 2 Migration.

Since the Garrity family essentially has cones of safety around them throughout Greenland 2 Migration, that’s largely bad news for anyone around them for extended periods of time. In most cases that’s particularly unfortunate since most of the characters they meet along the journey are likable people that arguably should have stuck around longer like the kind Frenchman (William Abadie) and his daughter, Camille (Nelia Valery).

Much like Jason Statham, Butler gets what he does exceedingly well and just delivers one entertaining film after another. He doesn’t play John like a superhero making for a more grounded leading man role for him.

Butler brings a certain vulnerability to John, who’s focus on his family is clearly prioritized over him being a tough guy. Baccarin is no slouch in the disaster action genre and establishes Allison as an equal partner, who doesn’t need saving and is able to stand alongside John through this hazardous journey.

The special effects are very well executed. Greenland 2 Migration is all about grand spectacle so there’s a certain flashy style over substance at play here in terms of believability, but they look convincing enough to elicit the appropriate gasps at certain scenes.

Disaster movies are a tough genre to convincingly land, but the Greenland 2 Migration crew crafted a worthy sequel to its predecessor that should satisfy fans of the first installment.
