The Mandalorian and Grogu zooms to forceful $102M opening
The Mandalorian and Grogu brought the Force to the Memorial Day box office weekend with $82 million for the actual weekend and $102 million opening overall for the four-day weekend.
This haul was in line with the early cautious estimates that the first Star Wars film in seven years would pull in between $80 million to $90 million. The $82 million three-day weekend is the lowest for the Disney Star Wars era coming just below the underwhelming $84.4 million debut of Solo: A Star Wars Story.
That film took the brunt of Star Wars fandom frustrated by the Sequel Trilogy. In years since, the 2018 film has garnered more goodwill from Star Wars fans who appreciate it as a separate standalone effort as opposed to an indictment of the franchise under the Disney brand.
While this opening could be viewed as disappointing for Disney, there is reason for optimism as The Mandalorian and Grogu earned an A- CinemaScore suggesting word of mouth could be strong off office run.
The Mandalorian and Grogu also benefit from a much leaner budget than Solo’s $302 million production with a reasonable $165 million budget. With no major blockbusters slated for next weekend, The Mandalorian and Grogu should roll to a consecutive box office win but the fallout from its debut will be key to its overall profitability.
Internationally, the film earned $64 million to take the global haul to $145 million for the true weekend and $165 million through the holiday.
In second place was Obsession, which improved over its $16 million debut with a $22 million follow-up for the three days and $28 million over the holiday weekend for a $58 million domestic tally and a $74 million global haul. That’s a staggering $30 million increase, which shows the word of mouth was very positive.
Michael danced to third place with another $20 million ($25.7 million throughout the holiday) for its fifth weekend. The biopic has been a steady presence in the Top 3 with a domestic haul of $319 million and an impressive $788 million total worldwide. It’s closing in on the $911 million total of Bohemian Rhapsody, the current highest grossing biopic.
Coming in at fourth place was The Devil Wears Prada 2 with $12.6 million ($16.5 million) for its fourth weekend. So far it’s brought in $197 million domestically and $604 million worldwide.
The Sheep Detectives wrapped up the Top 5 with $8.9 million ($12.3 million) dropping just 6% from the previous weekend. It’s now earned $47 million domestically.
