Corpse Knight 2

Corpse Knight might feature an undead protagonist, but this story from writer Michael Chaves, artist Matthew Roberts and colorist Rico Renzi feels anything but stale.

After her father’s murder and subsequent resurrection albeit as a zombie knight, Foy sets out to find Joan of Arc in hopes that she can revive him to his full capacity. Joan and her forces are moving at a faster clip than Foy and her father can catch them. She opts to take a shortcut through the dangerous Forest of Rambouillet, where a passerby warns them is overrun by an evil presence.

That warning proves fortuitous as Foy and her father are quickly overrun by monstrous wolves. They get separated in the fracas, with the Corpse Knight having to deal with the creatures and other sinister forces while Foy stumbles onto a house owned by The White Mask. Roberts gives the White Mask a fantastically haunting design that sets him up like a formidable threat to The Corpse Knight simply based on looks alone.

Foy also meets Gabriel, a young captive of the White Mask, who sees a potential ally that can help him escape. Chaves does a fantastic job establishing Corpse Knight like a bloody fairy tale. The story doesn’t need to be overly complex — it’s a quest for a cure that makes for an immediately gripping and engaging read. Roberts’ artwork is equally enthralling with exaggerated perspectives to make the woods and creatures appear larger than life. Renzi provides the finishing touch to lend a magical quality to the art with a mix of muted and vibrant color.

Corpse Knight is proving to be a fun mini-series and already seems like a story that could have extra life beyond this opening six-issue chapter.
