This issue serves as a refresher for what’s played out so far in the series and a teaser for what’s in store in this prelude chapter of The Unbelievables. For regular readers of the title, writer Peter J. Tomasi provides enough new material to justify checking out this installment. It’s more than a “clip show” issue as there is some advancements of the current subplots — Zachary’s parents are in prison for their schemes while Rose is serving alongside her parents in the soup kitchen.

Both are seeing visions about tapping into their powers and wanting to tap into other impulses. While they get more insight into those visions from their beloved pets, who serve a more valuable role than faithful companionship, a mysterious figure watches them. Artist Peter Snejbjerg gives the characters plenty of emotion and tells the story in an inviting animated style. The series hasn’t been too reliant on action sequences, but Snejbjerg has little trouble during those rare moments. Colorist John Kalisz brings a strong blend of bold colors to lean into the heaven and hell theme. Letterer Rob Leigh gets to be more playful with the dialogue fonts for the various characters.

Hornsby and Halo has been a fun read in the Ghost Machine library. Further tightening it up by having this issue serve as kickoff to the Unbelievables cross over event was a savvy way to get more readers onto the title.
