Scary Movie 6 scares up $55 million

The Scary Movie franchise proved it still has some life left after an 11-year hiatus as Scary Movie 6 with a franchise best $55 million opening weekend.

This also marked the return of the franchise of its original stars — Marlon & Shawn Wayans, Regina Hall and Anna Faris — who haven’t been together since Scary Movie 2 in 2001. The Wayans co-wrote Scary Movie 6, which skewers modern horror films like Sinners.

Scary Movie 3 held the franchise’s record for best opening with $49.7 million in 2003. Scary Movie 6 cost distributor Miramax $30 million so it’s already turned a sizable profit domestically. With the global tally, the film has netted a total opening of $106 million.

The other big new release for the weekend was Amazon’s Master of the Universe. The latest adaptation of the popular 80s cartoon series opened its box office run with $29.3 million. Given the film’s $200 million budget, it’s going to have an uphill challenge of making a profit. The film’s long-term prospects are encouraging with a B CinemaScore.

In third place was the runaway winner from last week, Backrooms, which dropped 70% for a $26 million sophomore weekend. This takes the unprecedented hits total to $135 million domestically and $213 million worldwide. The two week haul makes Backrooms the biggest hit for A24, beating out the $191 million from the highly promoted Oscar contender Marty Supreme.

Coming in at fourth was Obsession at $26 million. Now in its forth weekend, the thriller has domestically brought in $152.1 million and $200 million worldwide.

The Mandalorian and Grogu fell out of the top five with $10 million. The Star Wars spinoff, which has raked in $155.8 million domestically and $293.6 million globally, lost out to The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act, with $19.5 million.
