There might have been a little apprehension reading Space Ghost vol 2 12. After all, volume 1 ended after 12 issues and these days in comics there’s no guarantee that the story will continue after a milestone arc, especially one that did such a fantastic job of tying up so many plot threads from this volume.

Turns out those concerns weren’t necessary. Space Ghost vol 2 12 marked a very satisfying conclusion to The Time Master’s Revenge arc and ended with a tease for next issue. That’s great news as Space Ghost has been a special series since it started and hasn’t let up yet.

Space Ghost vol 2 12 finds Space Ghost captured by Tempus, the Time Master and his Time Tyrant allies. Tempus plans to remake the universe to one that fits in more in line with his vision for the world. Writer David Pepose explains Tempus’ motivation in a way that makes his actions more understandable without absolving the arc’s big villain of any of the atrocities he’s committed in order to restart time.

While Space Ghost struggles to break free, Jan, Jace and Space Spectre take the unexpected route of traveling the multiverse to recruit allies of their own. This was a fantastic payoff to the arc giving Pepose the opportunity to tease some future characters and potential fallout from Tempus’ actions in the time stream.

As has been the case largely since the midway point of the first volume, Space Ghost vol 2 12 shows that Jan and Jace aren’t bumbling sidekicks who constantly need to get rescued by Space Ghost. They’re invaluable partners who are essential to him in defeating his enemies using their distinct skills and talents. Pepose doesn’t have Jan or Jace just be mini-Space Ghosts. They both bring something different to the team from Jan’s strategic cunning and Jace with his technical wizardry and lighthearted attitude.

Artist Jonathan Lau gets to tackle several fights with Space Ghost vol 2 12 with some unexpected clashes thanks to the multiverse allies who have their own special powers and fighting styles. Lau has a strong sense of how to frame the action leading to very engaging panels and a solid flow to character movements. That’s doubly useful in an issue with so many characters. There are a few rougher panels than his norm, but Lau makes up for it with panels that beautifully capture the emotion of this big climactic battle.

Colorist Andrew Dalhouse gets to use Space Ghost vol 2 12 as a showcase for his color palette and coloring techniques for powers and lighting. Between the various characters with unique fonts for their diverse speech patterns and an abundance of sound effects, letterer Taylor Esposito is also very busy in this installment.

Space Ghost vol 2 12 is a terrific conclusion to one of the series’ strongest arcs. Pepose doesn’t write many stories that require more than one issue and these multi-chapters have always delivered to reinforce their significance. This may have been the best yet as this is a series that continues to prove that the creative team can always find another level to reach in chronicling these adventures.
