Invincible – This was Supposed to be Easy review S3 E5

This was Supposed to be Easy does a great job of showing an average week in the life of Invincible and all of the craziness that ensues.

The strength of the show — much like the comic book — is that Invincible doesn’t have to be at the forefront and in every scene. His supporting cast is immense and it’s comprised of characters that have been developed enough that viewers aren’t bored when the spotlight turns to them.

Supposed to be Easy doesn’t feature key supporting cast members like Nolan & Allen, the Guardians of the Globe or Cecil and the GDA yet it was a very satisfying episode.

Titan takes his daughter to school, but his #1 Isotope warns him that Mr. Liu is not thrilled that Multi-Paul is still in prison. That’s not for lack of trying. In easily Supposed to be Easy’s most gruesome scene, Paul starts cloning himself over and over until his cell is crammed with so many bodies it breaks the cell door. Multi-Paul comes close to escaping using his clones to fend off the normal guards until an armored-up one clamps a restraining bolt on him that prevents him from duplicating himself.

His sister, Dupli-Kate comes by to visit and tell him he screwed up his chances of getting released into the custody of the Guardians. Paul isn’t worried since The Order will break him out. They’ve had a fractured relationship after their father had a breakdown dealing with his children constantly creating duplicates. Paul resented their father for letting them get placed in GDA care and he broke out and became an assassin. Kate became a member of Teen Team and ultimately, a Guardian.

Supposed to be Easy kicks off the Mark subplot in a hilarious scene. Mark and Eve try to play off like she was in the neighborhood, but Oliver mentions he saw her fly out the window. He then tells Debbie that Mark and Eve had a sleepover, but they made too much noise and kept him up. That’s as good a time as any for Mark to bring up that he’s ready to look for his own place. To bring in the money to pay for rent, Eve suggests he make use of his powers as a superhero retainer service. Booster Gold and Blue Beetle would approve. Eve will join once she’s done with her studies.

Oliver isn’t home and she wakes a “sleeping” Mark to tell him he’s gone. Mark and Eve don’t have to search long as they find him skateboarding with friends, who don’t care that his skin is purple. Some teen bullies threaten them, and Mark is having nightmares of fists smashing through heads again. The messaging might have gotten through as Oliver just pants them instead of beating them up. That’s one less worry for Debbie.

Liu warns Titan he’s got 24-hours to break Multi-Paul out of prison or he’s going to kill his daughter. Hoping for some insight, Titan reaches out to Machine Head, who is spewing out sparks as fast as the insults, while offering little actual help. Titan tries to appeal to Invincible by showing him how much nicer the neighborhood has gotten now that he’s in charge of it. If Invincible doesn’t want to see a return to chaos, he’ll help him out.

Mark doesn’t want to get manipulated by Titan again and turns him down leading to the fiery chaos Titan predicted. Isotope sides with Liu, who shifts his essence to his dragon form. Liu proves a tough match for Invincible, who gets bitten, gorged and trampled while Eve tries to keep all of the prisoners in their cells. Multi-Paul tries to overwhelm her with his duplicates, but she creates cells for them — but she misses the main one. That’s a sneaky tease from Supposed to be Easy that will likely have some repercussions down the road.

In the chaos, Machine Head also escapes and quickly makes his way to his old office and kills Liu. That’s enough to save Invincible, who didn’t realize that once again Titan worked the odds in his favor — this time by arranging Liu and Machine Head into a conflict and having Invincible deal with the dragon while Machine Head killed Liu.

Titan still had Isotope carrying out his plans, which allowed it all to come together so smoothly. It was supposed to be easy for Invincible, but it actually was for Titan, who proved to be one of the series’ smartest villains so far.

Machine Head assembles The Order and declares himself the new leader. Titan arrives with one simple demand — he gets the city while The Order gets everything else. In a nice moment, Rex remembered Rae wanted a glimpse of a normal life and made dinner for her. Their bond is progressing as they hold hands while they eat. Nice job, Rex.

Both Mark and Eve agree that they might have been rushing things a bit with their relationship. He wants to stay home and enjoy having a little brother for a bit and Eve wants to enjoy a slower pace. No forced breakups or anything silly so much as an understandable recalibration.

Kate finishes training and sees paper dolls — a sign that her brother is on the loose again but still remembers their simpler days together. In the post credits, Liu’s bodyguard prepares his body as the dragon spirit leaves his body and resurrects Liu. That’s not going to be good for anyone.

This was Supposed to be Easy wasn’t a big game changing episode, but it’s slightly more relaxed story helped take the characters to some intriguing directions as the season starts to wind down to its conclusion.
