Marvel Legends X-Men 97 Archangel review (2026)

Unlike his earlier show appearances X-Men 97 Archangel fully captured the angst and trauma Warren Worthington III experienced while a pawn of Apocalypse. As a longtime X-Factor fan, I loved this take on Archangel almost as much as I appreciated seeing the X-Men 97 Archangel so I could finally replace my woefully outdated Bucky Cap mold version.

Let’s see if this version of the former Angela soars or if he’s death to my shelf.

Package: X-Men 97 Archangel gets the standard colorful X-Men 97 packaging with a wide window to showcase the figure and his accessories.

On the sides is a picture of Archangel from the cartoon. Over on the back is the rendered shot of the figure with smaller inserts showing off some of the accessories.

Likeness: While he’s definitely based on his cartoon appearance, the X-Men 97 Archangel figure can fit in fine with the comic book figures.

His head sculpt is fantastic with details like his eyebrows included and a pensive expression perfectly fitting for this point of Warren’s life.

For the X-Men 97 Archangel figure, Hasbro mostly used the Vulcan mold save the adjusted torso that removes the butterfly shoulders to accommodate the back ports for the wing attachments.

This is Hasbro’s new base body and a great choice for Archangel. Now he won’t look so tiny next to X-Factor Cyclops.

His default expanded wings are decent though they’re hardly as elaborate as some of the previous Archangel figures. They match the look from the cartoon, which is the real goal. Unfortunately, the ML team didn’t design the back plug to be able to accommodate the ports from the previous standard Archangel wings in case you wanted to swap them.

Scale: The Bucky Cap mold figures were becoming noticeably shorter as Hasbro’s Marvel Legends team continued enhancing the molds over the years.

This left many Bucky Cap figures looking like the teen sidekicks to figures on the Vulcan mold. In the comics, Warren is an inch shorter than Cyclops so the X-Men 97 Archangel figure has their scale just right.

Paint: X-Men 97 Archangel has a blue costume with fuchsia paneling covering most of his chest and the sides of his arms and legs down to his knees.

The paint job is impressive considering the intricate care needed to properly execute the paneling line work with a lighter color. With one minor exception, the line work was very crisp with no other problems.

His face is a lighter blue with sharp work for the fuchsia section of his cowl. In an appreciated extra, his yellow eyebrows are also painted on.

Articulation: Despite the missing butterfly shoulders, X-Men 97 Archangel can strike some fun dynamic poses.

Whether flying poses or grounded fighting stances, he’s very poseable with different display options for his wings.

Accessories: X-Men 97 Archangel gets a respectable amount of accessories, which is key since he’s a deluxe figure.

First off is an alternate head sculpt. This is the more aggressive, intense expression so you’ve got different options when he’s in battle.

Next is a set of outstretched hands for dramatic flying poses and to hold his fellow X-Men.

He also has a small clip for the larger wings to keep them locked in. You can remove this to have more movement with the wings but that leaves the pegs visible.

Another welcome addition is his retracted wing pack. In the early X-Factor run, Archangel didn’t always have his wings fully extended so it’s nice this piece is included.

Finally, in a cool nod to the episode, X-Men 97 Archangel comes with Cable’s blaster. It’s done in the X-Men 97 style, so the blaster doesn’t have a ton of detail and has a more simplistic paint job.

Worth It? X-Men 97 Archangel is $39.99 so he’s a little over $10 for a regular figure. Do the accessories balance that out? The X-Force Archangel also had a deluxe price point so that seems to be the norm now for winged figures these days. At least X-Men 97 Archangel provided a badly needed update for a classic X-Man.

Rating: 9.5 out of 10

Archangel finally gets a figure worthy of one of the best character redesigns in Marvel history. He’d get a perfect score if the old more comic book-accurate wings could also be used, but it’s a small complaint.

Where to Get It? I got the X-Men 97 Archangel from Entertainment Earth. I don’t get the sense he’s going to hit retail so you can try them or Amazon.
