The Odyssey delivers epic $124M opening weekend

The Odyssey delivered a massive opening weekend with $124 million — the second best opening of director/screenwriter Christopher Nolan’s career.

Nolan has been plenty prolific since The Dark Knight Rises opened to $160 million in 2012, but The Odyssey proved to be a hit with critics and audiences alike.

Additionally, The Odyssey scored the year’s best live-action opening trailing massive animated hits Toy Story 5 ($159 million) and Super Mario Galaxy Movie ($131 million). It was a rough day for the “go woke, go broke” crowd who railed against Nolan’s decision to have a diverse cast including Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, Travis Scott and John Leguizamo.

Globally, The Odyssey sailed away with a huge $264 million opening. With an excellent A CinemaScore look for The Odyssey to remain a juggernaut for at least the next two weekends until Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theaters on July 31.

With The Odyssey conquering the box office, it was tough sailing for the rest of the competition.

Moana trailed very far behind with $19 million for its second week. That’s a steep drop from its underwhelming $43 million debut. With a total of $82 million, Moana is going to be a rare live action take on a fan favorite animated feature that fails to deliver at the box office.

In third place was an animated tie between Toy Story 5 and Minions and Monsters with both slated to bring in exactly $14.8 million. The Sunday box office final tally could ultimately break the tie.

This weekend takes the latest Minions installment to $137 million ($323 million worldwide). The Minions have been a solid billion-dollar franchise for distributor Universal and while this will be the lowest grossing of the series, with a production budget of $85 million, it’s already turned a profit.

With the highest grossing opening of any 2026 film, Toy Story 5 has now tallied $431 million domestically in its fifth week and $958 million globally. That’s good enough to take the top grossing slot of the year edging Super Mario Galaxy’s $430 million.

Wrapping up the Top 5 was Evil Dead Burn with $5 million to take its total to $24 million and $51 million worldwide.
