DC Comics reviews 7/22/26 – JLU 21, Absolute Wonder Woman 22

Superboy Prime’s run as the headliner has come to an end, which against all odds when this Reign of the Superboys event was announced, is highly disappointing. That’s due to writer Joshua Williamson, artist Dan Mora, colorist Alejandro Sanchez and letterer Ariana Maher just making this such a fun character-focused read that felt like the best parts of comic books in one breezy adventure.

Manchester Black wants Superboy Prime’s help in changing history in a way that fixes the universe for the better. Since Superboy Prime is actively trying to stay on his “redemption arc,” he’s got no interest in aiding Black. Williamson makes this a fun battle of wits since both characters are very snarky and quick to throw out some cutting barbs as quickly as fists. It’s pretty incredible how Williamson has truly made this redemption of Prime land so convincingly. He’s a likable screwup who doesn’t have it all down. In that sense, Prime is one of the more relatable heroes since he doesn’t always say or do the right thing.

Black might actually be a better fit for Prime’s archrival than some other characters. Williamson makes a strong case for it here. Mora’s art is outstanding as always with big, bombastic action sequences and dynamic character expressions that aren’t just limited to Prime and Black. Sanchez’s bright colors give the issue a lighter visual tone to reiterate that this isn’t some overly dramatic and deathly serious storyline. Maher provides solid emphasis for the heavy-hitting moments and exchanges as well.

This arc has been a blast and hopefully DC is already lining this creative team up to do a Superboy Prime spin-off assuming he survives the Kingdom of Zod event starting next month.
