Box office roundup

Spider-Man: Brand New Day webs $355M, 2nd best ever opening weekend

The final Sunday numbers clearly have yet to arrive, but Spider-Man: Brand New Day is projected to come thisclose from dethroning Avengers: Endgame as the champ for the biggest box office opening weekend.

As of Sunday afternoon, Spider-Man: Brand New Day trails Endgame by a “whopping” $2 million dollars so it’s safe to say it’ll come down to the final numbers on Monday.

Regardless, it’s a massive testament to Spider-Man: Brand New Day the strength of the Spider-Man brand that it’s even a contest. Endgame was the culmination of a 20-film saga in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so its box office numbers — while staggering — were hardly surprising.

That’s big news for the Sony/Marvel Studios joint-production, which should ensure this partnership continues through many more Spider-Man installments.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day reiterated that the Spider-Man brand might actually be bigger than Marvel Studios itself, which has struggled at the box office with underperforming films that have stoked the flames of superhero movie fatigue.

Its last effort, Spider-Man: No Way Home had the second largest opening weekend when it debuted in 2021 at the height of the global pandemic with $260 million. That was good enough to beat out Avengers: Infinity War, which set the record at $257 million when it debuted in 2018. Notice the pattern?

For all of the Marvel Studios is crashing out rhetoric, the facts are no one does big event must-see blockbusters better.

Even if it were to drop 50% next weekend, which seems unlikely given its A CinemaScore, Spider-Man: Brand New Day would still take the title of highest grossing film of 2026 from Toy Story 5, which sits at $457 million, next weekend. At this point the film seems a lock to make well over $1 billion by next weekend as well.

Worldwide, the numbers were equally rosy for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The overseas markets accounted for $550 million taking the fourth installment of the Tom Holland/Zendaya/Jacob Batalon franchise to a global total of $875 million.

Only three 2026 films have reached the billion dollar club so far — Toy Story 5 ($1.03 billion), Michael ($1.02 billion) and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie ($1.01 billion) — and Brand New Day will be leading the pack in days.

While Spider-Man: Brand New Day was the big draw, audiences didn’t exactly forget The Odyssey either. Christopher Nolan’s epic, which also features Holland, Zendaya and Brand New Day co-star Jon Bernthal, brought in another $51 million in its third weekend.

That takes its total to $395.5 million domestically and $911 million worldwide as it closes in on one billion as well.
