Spider-Man: Brand New Day earns highest opening weekend with $360M

The numbers were so close yesterday that like Thanos it seemed inevitable that Spider-Man: Brand New Day was actually going to overtake Avengers: Endgame for the highest grossing domestic opening of all time.

By Sunday afternoon, Spider-Man: Brand New Day only trailed Endgame’s record $357 million opening by $2 million. Sometimes the final numbers are softer than expected, but it seemed pretty clear this record was not just in range, but also likely to be eclipsed without making it close.

The official numbers arrived Monday morning proving that Spider-Man didn’t need Captain America, Iron Man and Thor to make box office history. Spider-Man: Brand New Day just needed The Hulk, The Punisher…and MJ and Ned Leeds. Spider-Man: Brand New Day easily beat out Endgame with $360 million.

Keep in mind this number likely would have been much higher if The Odyssey didn’t have exclusive access to IMAX theaters.

Clearly Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s box office numbers made enough noise that theaters were able to accommodate some showings of its 440 domestic screens for Brand New Day and The Odyssey. IMAX theaters with 70mm screens will remain exclusive to The Odyssey.

It’s not all bad news for Endgame record holder fans. The Avengers team-up with Black Panther, Dr. Strange and the Guardians of the Galaxy still remains the champ in terms of global box office openings with a staggering $1.22 billion compared to Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s $932 million.

On the daily breakdown over the weekend, Brand New Day set the record for the best Friday with $170 million, the second-best Saturday behind Endgame ($106 million to $109.2 million) and Sunday ($88.7 million to $90.3 million). Brand New Day benefited from the highest previews with $72 million compared to Endgame’s $60 million.
