Invincible – All I Can Say Is I’m Sorry review S3 E6

All I Can Say Is I’m Sorry sure feels like it’s going to take future episodes to be truly exceptional to top this one in terms of showcasing the best of Invincible. From genuinely funny moments, thrilling action sequences, compelling character moments and heartbreaking tragedy, All I Can Say Is I’m Sorry truly delivered a masterful episode. 

It opens with a moment that seems like a nod to the opening act of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice although this sequence actually predates the 2016 film by a solid 5 years. Scott Duvall (Aaron Paul) was with his sister, Jessica (Heather Gonzalez) and niece enjoying a lovely day in Chicago when Omni-Man batters Invincible. In the wake of the battle, Scott is dismayed to find them dead in the rubble.

That’s more than enough for a solid villain origin, but Scott is hardly a maniacal nutjob. He goes the legal route, but the DA gracefully tries to let him down despite a petition with more names than the victims asking for some form of justice.

Scott has a lower-level power that responds to kinetic energy, but he’s found a way to enhance it further with some equipment he stole at his job — the GDA? Cecile and Donald probably need to be a bit more vigilant on their new hire interviews.

Invincible and Eve are taking the role as Oliver’s superhero mentors seriously by letting him get some training in battling The Elephant. All I Can Say Is I’m Sorry certainly takes a darker turn, but this lighthearted moment was funny especially once The Elephant realized his rampage was just being used as a practice round for Invincible’s junior partner. 

Oliver questions if the world will ever forgive Omni-Man. It’s a tricky question and a harder discussion point for Invincible, who remembers being used as a blade to dismember people at the hands of his own father in Chicago. Forgiveness probably isn’t on most folks’ mind, Oliver.

That definitely is the case for Scott, who has a costume and a name now — Powerplex. His wife, Becky (Kate Mara), is just as grief-stricken as her husband and is fully on board with him getting revenge. As soon as she finishes getting their baby back to sleep.

All I Can Say Is I’m Sorry has another lighter moment as Paul struggles to relate to Mark and Oliver hoping to find some common ground with their super heroics and his real estate work. Paul is a likable guy who isn’t coming off like a jerk. He’s even made headway with Oliver, who likes him just fine. 

Powerplex gets a massive charge by jumping off a building. Working in the title screen every time he says Invincible was a pretty clever gag for All I Can Say Is I’m Sorry. Mark is fine letting some of the other heroes deal with this threat. He’s celebrating William’s birthday with Rick, Eve, Amber and her new boyfriend, Kyle. Mark quickly connects with Kyle over their shared appreciation for Seance Dog. 

With Invincible not answering the call, Shapesmith responds. He takes Powerplex too easily and gets overpowered by Powerplex’s power surge. Scott doesn’t want to hurt anyone else — he just wants Invincible. This helps give All I Can Say Is I’m Sorry a unique twist as Powerplex is actively trying to avoid becoming like Invincible and is mindful not to hurt innocents while he seeks justice. 

While he didn’t get to confront Invincible on his debut, Powerplex will get another shot at the memorial to honor the fallen in Chicago. Eve steps in to keep Invincible out of the fight since that would agitate Powerplex further. Even in this battle, All I Can Say Is I’m Sorry properly captures the intricacies of this particular “villain” as Eve recognizes he needs help, not a fight. 

All I Can Say Is I’m Sorry also includes some advancing of the Guardians’ outcasts as they figure out their next moves. Rudy devised a belt to stop Amanda from de-aging every time she transformed into Monster Girl while Rae decides she needs to quit. She’s gone through enough trauma and wants to take a risk on doing something different for herself.

So often heroes that decide to hang it up are written like whiners, but Rae makes a compelling argument. It’s just not enough to convince Rex to join her. This was a particularly well written exchange showing the maturity of Invincible and how its characters are treated like actual people.

Powerplex escapes GDA custody and knows they’ll be back in full force to capture him. Becky won’t leave him and has another means for them to make Invincible pay. An interesting angle with All I Can Say Is I’m Sorry is Becky keeps encouraging Scott to stay focused on payback.

Their grief is overflowing and ironically, even their newborn baby isn’t enough to get them out of this pit of despair. It really shows how overpowering and damaging unchecked grief can be in the most literal sense. 

Invincible meets up with Donald who has the file on Powerplex and the experimental power storage technology that allows him to get charged up every time he’s hit. Mark is relieved to know at least it was Powerplex behind the orbs tracking him until Donald tells him that is definitely someone else. Mark is still with Donald when he gets news of Powerplex’s location.

In a fitting showdown for All I Can Say Is I’m Sorry, Powerplex is at Jessica’s apartment with Becky and Jack bound. This is all part of Scott and Becky’s plan as she’s all on board with this final opportunity to stop Invincible. Mark refuses to fight Powerplex, who gets more incensed and powers up further to electrocute Invincible.

The largest surge is too powerful and turns Becky and Jack to ash. We’ve had the Guardians maimed and characters getting decapitated, but All I Can Say Is I’m Sorry has easily the most heart-wrenching deaths of the series so far.

Paul provides Powerplex such raw emotion and anguish it feels too real. Steven Yeun is also fantastic here as Mark is crushed thinking how his actions have led to such an unspeakable tragedy. This is likely the reason Invincible goes to the prison to tell Powerplex he does remember his sister and that he won’t push aside thinking about those caught in the wake of his actions any longer.

It’s a bit of a breakthrough for Mark, but Powerplex wants nothing to do with it. Even after everything that’s happened, he’s still focused on making Invincible pay.

Eve comes to rooftop to comfort Mark as the orb watches him again. This time we get the full reveal of Angstrom Levy is not dead and he’s managed to amass an army of Invincibles from various realities to serve as his army. That’s not going to work out well for Mark or his friends.

There will likely be some bloodier, more action-packed installments but All I Can Say Is I’m Sorry blends everything that makes Invincible into a memorably tragic and heartfelt episode.
