Image Comics reviews 8/12/26 – Transformers 35, GI Joe RAH 331
GI Joe: A Real American Hero 331
The Joes are still trying to deal with their brainwashed ninjas after a trigger turned Snake-Eyes, Throwdown and Dawn into killing agents. Duke, Stalker, Mainframe and Dial-Tone managed to trap Dawn in a contained area at the Pitt while Beach Head and Helix have Throwdown convinced the Terror Drome and its occupants are really GI Joes that need to be defeated.
Snake Eyes managed to overcome the brainwashing on his own just as Shockwave and Rock n Roll arrive to warn Scarlett. Writer Larry Hama is mixing in different Joes to get into the Ninja Adventure Stories so that’s a plus, but it’s becoming tiresome watching GI Joe focus so much time on Snake Eyes, Dawn and the Revanche ninjas robots. The book has been at its best at late when the ninjas aren’t so prevalent and the robot enemies are non-factors.

It’s the artwork that carries the issue. Artist Paul Pelletier (with inker Tony Kordos) delivers his usual quality work. It was especially nice to see his take on characters from different Joe eras in Shockwave and Rock n Roll teaming up. Colorist Francesco Segala provides warm color choices that complement Pelletier’s work beautifully. Letterer Pat Brosseau sets up some very fun sound effects and smart emphasis on words to properly convey tone and emotion.
Hama can clearly still write excellent GI Joe stories, but he has become too intrigued with different scenarios to take the ninjas instead of the wider and much more interesting landscape of the franchise.
