McFarlane Toys DC Multiverse Batman vs Professor Zoom review (2024)

Professor Zoom and Flashpoint Batman were two of the featured players of Flashpoint, the DC event that changed everything for DC Comics. For a time… McFarlane Toys decided it was time to revisit the characters in a two pack with upgraded molds and some extra accessories.

McFarlane Toys released a Flashpoint Batman during their early period when they just focused on making Batman figures. Kidding, they never stopped. Professor Zoom was due for a figure since the initial Reverse Flash used that early underwhelming Flash mold.

Let’s see if this two pack was worth the double dip or if it was an unnecessary rehash.

Packaging: The Multiverse line is consistent with solo and two-packs. The only difference is the length. It retains the predominantly black color scheme with some white and blue accents.

We get a nice wide window to show off both figures and all of their accessories. Both sides feature the character names while the left side also indicates that this is from Flashpoint. On the back are two separate drawings from Flashpoint artist Andy Kubert, inker Sandra Hope and colorist Alex Sinclair.

Likeness: This is the same Flashpoint Batman as the 2020 release with two exceptions. The default head sculpt is an unmasked Thomas Wayne portrait that was used in the 2021 Flashpoint Batman Unmasked release.

The unmasked sculpt looks more sleepy than intense. Based on some of the artists’ take on him, I’d buy this head sculpt more for a Jonathan Kent than Batman’s father. With the unmasked portrait, he also has a lowered cowl that sits around his neck.

He does have a different masked head sculpt that doesn’t seem to match up with any of the other Batman sculpts, which is pretty impressive. This one has a ton of intensity and emotion with a slight sneer like he’s ready to bring the pain.

Pin joints don’t bother me provided the pins don’t break up the outfit color although it does seem weird to not just reuse some of the numerous other Batman figures with improved bodies just to provide something else different with this one.

The ankle setup is weird with the new figure as it sits higher than the original for some reason.

Professor Zoom is a direct repaint of The Flash that was ironically released in the Flashpoint Collect to Build Cyborg wave.

This is not a bad thing at all as that Flash figure was excellent for the Scarlet Speedster and works just as well for Professor Zoom.

Like Flashpoint Batman, his default look has an angry yelling unmasked Zoom head sculpt.

His masked portrait has a smirk but lacks the smug bastard vibe Professor Zoom sports for most of his interaction with Barry.

Scale: Flashpoint Batman is slightly taller than The Flash and Professor Zoom. Considering those are the main characters he should interact with — I will ignore Tom King’s questionable heel turn of Flashpoint Batman late in his Batman run — those are the only characters he can interact with besides the Flashpoint Cyborg.

Paint: Flashpoint Batman has a simple color scheme that is largely mistake proof given the mostly grey body and the separate black and red parts molded in those respective colors.

The only areas of any paint concern are the logo, which is very crisp and the unmasked head sculpt. Thomas has a slight 5 o’clock shadow, which is done nicely. It’s not too overblown or non-existent.

A little bit of a wash in his hair would have further helped to bring out the hair detail.

Professor Zoom has the darker yellow hue that’s not the almost too bright canary yellow used for Dr. Fate or Geo-Force. This is a strong shade of yellow that takes the light well instead of “bleaching” it out further.

The chest logo came out clean although some of the connected lightning bolts on his wrist needed another hit of red paint. That’s a shift since normally yellow against any other color is the one that has the obvious bleed through.

His hair does have a wash that makes the grey hair look so much better compared to Thomas Wayne.

Articulation: Flashpoint Batman is a fairly smooth figure who moves better than his blocky build might indicate. The holsters really only restrict kicking poses, which is their only drawback.

The neck articulation has better range than most allowing for more dramatic poses as he sizes up foes with his various weapons. His cape is positioned behind his back so it’s not restrictive although it would’ve been nice to get a soft good upgrade for dynamic action stances.

Professor Zoom benefits from the Flash body, which is such a smooth and fluid mold particularly for getting good running poses. Similar to the Flashpoint Flash, Zoom doesn’t get a set of running/flat hands, which somewhat misses the point of having a speedster making the best use of the articulation.

Flashpoint Batman and Professor Zoom have:

Accessories: Flashpoint Batman doesn’t have many new accessories since his previous releases covered all of the essential items. They’re just smartly included in this set.

First up are his two guns, which scale pretty well to him and include a subtle metallic paint to convey their base element and to give them more than the standard toy appearance.

Next up is the long broadsword he uses to skewer Professor Zoom. It’s got a fantastically detailed hilt and a long blade.

Professor Zoom has the alternate masked portrait and good piece around his neck to simulate him lowering the mask. He also has the lightning bolt spear he carried with him during Flash Reboot. It’s got gold bolts on either end and a dark grey rod.

There’s also a base with a brick path and dirt where you can plug in the final accessory — Bruce Wayne’s grave. Pretty morbid, but an awesome Flashpoint-specific accessory that can be used for other Batman dioramas.

Worth It? This set has been all over the place price wise. I got it for $27.99, which is the price of one figure these days. It’s an upgrade over the original Flashpoint Batman since it has the alternate portrait and sword as well as a new masked head sculpt. Professor Zoom is a much better figure than his original version as well.

Rating: 9 out of 10

A few more enhancements to the set like a soft good, wired cape for Flashpoint Batman and a third more expressive head sculpt for Zoom would have put it over the top, but there’s still enough to warrant the double dip.
