Corpse Knight’s penultimate issue did not disappoint.

Writer Michael Chaves, artist Matthew Roberts, colorist Rico Renzi and letterer Pat Brosseau have really delivered one of the more unique and captivating mini-series in years. Last issue saw Foy and her father finally reach the end of their quest as they met Joan of Arc. Instead of using her divine abilities to save her father, Foy watched in horror as Joan ordered the Corpse Knight killed once and for all.

But can the Corpse Knight actually truly be killed?

Foy relates her journey to one of Joan’s lieutenants, who might not be as loyal as he claims. He might actually be planning to undermine Joan and Foy could be his tool now that he’s pieced together the source of true magic in the realm. That same magic wielder could be his undoing as well as lining up events to lean into Joan’s fate.

Roberts’ artwork was superb throughout this issue with a beautifully animation-inspired look at Foy’s father at his most heroic contrasting with the birth of the Corpse Knight. As usual, Roberts concocts one incredibly creative layout to further tell the story. Renzi’s color choices have always been inspired whether capturing a starry night or the knight’s body engulfed in flames. Brousseau’s clean lettering is neatly arranged with some well-placed sound effects.

The series finale gets an ideal set up with this installment, which raises some interesting questions and captivating character work.
