Ghost Pepper continues its surprisingly confusing slide. Writer/artist/letterer Ludo Lullabi has a wider idea for this story that started off so simple — a mysterious stranger meets up with a food truck driver and reluctantly gets pulled back into action that led to a great tragedy years ago.

Somewhere along the way, the fun of Ghost Pepper has taken a backseat to a complex story about supremely powered beings that’s been a tad heavy handed and challenging to follow. With Ash in a superpowered state, Lullabi has introduced or expanded the roles of several supporting character who weren’t the featured supporting characters at the start of the series. Vex and Spark are confronted by Ax, who needs to find a new hero in order to calm Ash down and save the world. Maybe that hero will be Loloi?

Bataar also has to face the music and prepares to make a major shift in order to do his part to stop Ash once and for all.

Lullabi has thrown these new plot points out quickly without much backstory essentially making readers fill in the gaps in terms of what’s happening. The artwork remains engaging especially with more focus this issue on the characters and Lullabi’s dramatic anime sense of showing expressive characters. Adriano Lucas’ color work is sharp with striking reds, oranges, yellows and blacks.

Despite some of the confusing plot points, it still feels like Lullabi can stick the landing for the series provided some answers start getting revealed soon.
