Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits $2.33 billion, Coyote vs Acme places 2nd

Coyote vs Acme fond a tougher unstoppable force than Roadrunner as Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues to dominate the box office.

The Marvel Studios/Sony film brought in another $22 million for its fifth weekend. That takes its domestic haul to $891 million. Surpassing the $936 million record total of Star Wars: The Force Awakens seems like a given at this rate since it just needs another $45 million, but being the first film to reach $1 billion at the box office seems within reach as well.

The feel-good story of the weekend has to be Coyote vs. Acme, which earned $15 million in its debut to beat out The Odyssey’s seventh weekend. Coyote vs Acme was shelved by Warner Bros for a $5 million write-off before being rescued by Ketchup Entertainment, which paid $50 million for the distribution rights. This was largely due to the response to Looney Tunes fans who pushed for the 2021 film to finally get released in theaters.

Impressively, The Odyssey remains in the Top 5 nearly two months after its debut. The Christopher Nolan film earned another $14.3 million at the domestic box office and another $48.6 million internationally taking its total to $564 million domestically and $1.5 billion worldwide. When the final numbers come in on Monday, The Odyssey will pass Furious 7 for second place in Universal’s overall highest grossing film list. The final obstacle is 2015’s Jurassic World with $1.67 billion.

In fourth place was Insidious: Out of the Further with $10.1 million in its sophomore weekend. While that’s a 60% drop from its first weekend, it’s all profit for Screen Gems/Stage 6/Blumhouse-Atomic Monster as the thriller cost a modest $18 million to produce. Currently it stands at $43.6 million domestically and $110 million globally.

Wrapping up the Top 5 was Ridley Scott’s post-apocalyptic drama, The Dog Stars with a weak $8 million domestic and $19.8 million global haul. That’s not great considering the film has a hefty $70 million budget.
