Writer Ryan North has come up with a very clever Flash arc that is both not too overly serious, but also one where it can clearly take a different route than Flash intends.

After successfully using his Flash vision to prevent tragedies before they happen in Central City and Keystone City, Wally decides to pitch his service to Metropolis. With Superman away at the time of this story, Flash makes his pitch to Jon Kent who sees the inherent value of this level of assistance. North makes this swing through Metropolis fun with Wally’s narration about what makes Metropolis such a thriving city and the one thing it’s seriously lacking.

Artist Gavin Guidry does a fantastic job with these sequences showing Wally and Jon in action to move on his precognitive visions. Colorist Adriano Lucas keeps the mood light and breezy befitting this story where Wally is seeing a brighter horizon even if he can’t see the potential issues in store.

Next on Wally’s agenda is Gotham, which is quickly shot down by Red Tornado per the events going on in the Batman titles. If you can’t help Batman, you go to the next best city prompting Wally to go to Star City. While this arc has been a very pleasant surprise, North is essentially writing a dated story given the various changes to the heroes featured throughout.

Green Arrow isn’t thrilled with the idea and wants no part of some sort of predictive service, which does seem like it could go against some ethics clauses at the very least. Wally doesn’t appreciate getting turned down, prompting a spot-on character choice by Green Arrow, who decides it’s time for the Justice League to have a serious conversation about Wally’s actions.

The potential avenues this story can take are very intriguing showing that some thoughtful changes to a character’s abilities can make for an engaging — if not permanent — exciting shake up to the status quo.
