DC Comics reviews 9/23/26 – JLU 23, Absolute Batman 24
The Flash 37
Wally West is feeling pretty good about himself these days. He’s using a new power, which he calls his Flashes of Insight, to see crime before it happens. Call it The Flash’s Minority Report. The Flashes of Insight are evolving so Wally is now able to see a week into the future and he jumps ahead of the perpetrators to see how their plan to blow up three bridges in Metropolis, Central and Star cities came about.
Writer Ryan North does a strong job of showing how Flash’s good intentions could have serious problems especially as the Justice League, led by Green Arrow, start questioning if Wally has the right to be the judge and jury for crimes that haven’t even been committed yet. It’s an interesting dilemma and North makes it more of a discussion instead of the battle among teammates trope.
Artist Gavin Guidry doesn’t let the serious topic disrupt the visual tone of the series. Although this notion of a superhero on surveillance mode is not a happy go lucky story, it is a Flash story and should look different compared to this playing out in a Batman title. Guidry’s lighter art style lines up well with how the story is handled with less emphasis on action and more on personal connection with the heroes and Wally’s legitimately good intentions.
Colorist Adriano Lucas matches that cheery tone with brighter primary colors that stand out against more muted background colors. Letterer Buddy Beaudoin seems to have fun with smaller sound effects like Flash tapping people on their shoulders and more prominent ones like Flash’s running and explosions.
This arc has been a fun way to explore Flash learning new abilities and the potential harm of a superhero playing the ultimate form of Big Brother.
