Image Comics reviews 9/23/26 – Void Rivals 34, Corpse Knight 6
Corpse Knight 6
Corpse Knight 6 made for a satisfying conclusion to an enthralling quasi historical mini-series.
The issue opens with a flashback with Foy’s parents deciding on a name for their soon to arrive daughter. Her father would rather not tell Foy about their past, but her mother thinks she must know so she understands what they gave up for her.
Writer Michael Chaves uses that moment to beautifully segue into the present day with Foy and several of her fellow child prisoners trying to escape their cells. It’s here that Foy realizes she has some of her mother’s witchcraft abilities as she reanimates one of the children who was cruelly killed by Joan of Arc’s bodyguard, Gilles.
Outside Joan’s castle, Foy’s father has also awakened and slaughtering anyone in his path en route to Foy.
Artist Matthew Roberts showcases these action sequences in dynamic fashion. As has been the norm through the mini-series, Roberts provides one hauntingly beautiful page that wonderfully spotlights one key moment. Colorist Rico Renzi adds dazzling bold colors while letterer Pat Brosseau provides understated sound effects that complements the moment rather than overwhelm it.
Selfishly, this felt like a series that could have multiple arcs — a girl and her zombie knight father seems ripe for numerous stories, but there’s something equally fitting in having this be a one and done quest that sticks the landing.
