Hyde Street 13

hyde street 13

Hyde Street 13 might prove to be the unluckiest number for the inhabitants of Hyde Street as The Butcher has returned. And he’s eager to add to his body count. After gutting Pranky in a shocking moment last issue, The Butcher sets his sights on Miss Goodbody who isn’t proving all that willing a victim.

As that horror movie scene plays out, Sister Hood informs Mr. X-Ray of The Butcher’s origin. How The Butcher learned a dark secret about Hyde Street that The Scorekeeper didn’t want known to the other participants. The Butcher stopped trying to claim souls so he could escape like Lost at Sea, The Burning Hag and Little Miss Lamb. He decided to start hunting the other competitors.

Writer Geoff Johns sets this origin up wonderfully, showing he is still one of the masters at defining a character’s backstory in a single issue. Johns makes The Butcher terrifying in a way that some of the other cruel Hyde Street participants can’t match. Sure, they’re somewhat quirky and sinister in dealing with horrible people, but The Butcher is on another level.

MORE:

Artist Ivan Reis really digs into the creepiness of The Butcher and the previous Hyde Street participants. Reis comes up with some amazing designs for characters like Sawbones, The Boogeyman, The Ragged Orphan and Blood Hare fully diving into a more monstrous tone. Inker Danny Miki strongly firms up the detail to take the art to another level.

Colorist Brad Anderson does masterful work establishing the mood with Sister Hood and X-Ray’s conversation bringing to light the truth of The Butcher while his pursuit of Miss Goodbody is largely in darker hues. Letterer Rob Leigh creatively explores different fonts for the various characters to show that Hyde Street is a mishmash of characters from different time periods and eras.

The main knock on this series remains the inconsistent release schedule as it slows the momentum. When we get a new installment, it always proves worthwhile. Given the stellar work of Reis, Miki, Anderson and Leigh the end result always proves worth the wait.
