10 best Comic Book Movie Costumes
7. Captain America (Captain America: The First Avenger)
JKL: Before Steve Rogers becomes an actual hero, he’s forced to parade around as a propaganda tool in the effort to raise war bonds. During one of the film’s more memorable scenes, Chris Evans actually wears the comic book costume. The scene is intended to poke gentle fun at the outfit, but Anna B. Sheppard’s costume design is a little too good and it looks far better than a joke attire should be. With a few minor changes, this version of the costume could have worked just fine as Cap’s final outfit for the film.
GP: Maybe the original costume is a little bit cartoony (especially compared to the more rugged, military-inspired costume he ends up wearing) but it was important to some die-hard fans that they include it in the film, even if it was in jest.
CS: As he is my favorite comic hero, I was thrilled at the costume design, as you say, for the Spangled scene. Making these pieces wearable and beautiful is harder than it looks…kudos to Sheppard! As designer for Band of Brothers, Inglourious Basterds, The Pianist and Schindler’s List, she has a great grasp of military design and brought it to bear for Cap in all the best ways.
