Justice League #33

Justice League #33 cover

Although it wasn’t as compelling a ride as Gotham Resistance, Bats Out of Hell had a strong conclusion that sets the stage for an epic Metal #4.

Sometimes an arc just needs a good finale to pay off the build up. That was definitely the case in this installment.

With the Justice League captured by the nightmare Batmen, their last hope came down to Cyborg. As the perennial under-served League member, it was nice seeing Cyborg take the spotlight and make the most of it. I’ve been skeptical of his placement in the League, but with more issues like this, I might finally become a believer.

Writer Joshua Williamson built this finale well in really setting the stage for the League to battle the Nightmare Batmen. This issue couldn’t mark the end of the conflict, but made for a fun appetizer before the main course in Metal.

Tyler Kirkham handles most of the art with Mike Janin helping out in the middle chapter.  As a big Janin fan, I wish the roles were reversed, but Kirkham did solid work here. Bats Out of Hell started off slowly, but evolved to become another strong side quest from the main story. These Metal tie-ins have definitely proven to be more than time killers until the next installment and I’m looking forward to seeing how it plays out. — Jeffrey Lyles
