Dynamite Entertainment – Space Ghost Vol 2 5 review
Space Ghost Vol 2 5 shows that a great story doesn’t need to be dragged out over seven or eight issues. This second and final chapter of the Glasstor/Remora War arc is neatly wrapped up in an efficient two issues without feeling like it was rushed.
The beauty of Space Ghost Vol 2 5 is how it feels like a throwback to stellar stories from the 70s and 80s where a memorable story didn’t have to be a yearlong event. It was just another month or a string of two or three months. Hopefully Space Ghost fans and comic fans in general appreciate the work of the creative team for their old school approach as it really delivers so much more quality varied content on a monthly basis than 90% of the titles on the comic stands.
Writer David Pepose picks up Space Ghost Vol 2 5 from last issue’s rare cliffhanger. Space Ghost risked his life to stop a Glasstor attack on Remora and now is racing to Glasstor to prevent another tragedy. The root cause of the problem is King Remora of the Space Sharks and Emperor Glasstor of the Crystalline Empire were all set to sign a peace treaty effectively ending their storied war when a sniper narrowly missed King Remora.
Some party’s efforts to stop the peace treaty resumed the war efforts leave Jace a captive of the Space Sharks who think he might have been the would-be assassin. Meanwhile Jan, along with Blip, is racing off to follow a lead on the real gunman. Pepose gives Jan a fun showcase moment as she deals with some not so helpful bar patrons.
Space Ghost has his own spotlight sequence as he once again puts his life on the line to stop the Remora underwater attack on Glasstor. And Jace gets in on the action as well. Space Ghost Vol 2 5 is another example of how Pepose so consistently writes these characters with such care and attention that it feels like he’s been writing this series for multiple years instead of just nearly getting to the halfway point of his second year.

Space Ghost reads like a classic hero, yet he can let his emotions get the better of him at times. Pepose is showing the steady evolution of Space Ghost’s relationships with Jan and Jace and the positive impact they’re having on his outlook on life. Jan and Jace are written as helpful sidekicks instead of constantly getting in trouble and needing Space Ghost to rescue them in addition to stopping some bad guy.
Jonathan Lau’s artwork seems to have taken another step as he continues to improve on his storytelling techniques. Lau’s perspective choice and framing of the action sequences has enhanced the overall presentation of an already highly respectable level. It’s always interesting to see how an artist evolves through their time on a book and Lau is a prime example of why it’s so important to have a regular artist working on a title consistently for an extended run. Nowadays, two years seems like a long time, but hopefully Lau continues to stay on this title for many years to come.
Space Ghost Vol 2 5 could look fine with other artists, but Lau has established himself as the artist for this amazing run. Anyone else stepping in now would have a serious uphill battle to equal Lau’s contributions to the series’ success.
Colorist Andrew Dalhouse really gets to show off with so many various settings particularly Space Ghost on Glasstor. The lighting effects against the crystalized backdrops is very well done. Letterer Taylor Esposito does commendable work with the sound effects as well as creating unique text boxes and fonts for the numerous alien species. It’s welcome attention to detail just to mix it up.
Space Ghost Vol 2 5 is another tremendous installment of a series that’s really vying for the title of best superhero series on the market. The creative team is just fully locked in and they’re constantly cranking out outstanding issues each month. This is the kind of run to get people hooked on comics again.
