Resident Evil (2026) scares up $60M in franchise best
Resident Evil (2026) kicked off the latest entry in the series with a franchise-best $60 million opening.
That was far and away the best opening for the series, which previously had the franchise’s best opening in 2010 with Resident Evil: Afterlife with $27 million. Resident Evil (2026) easily cleared that mark early in the day Saturday.
Not only was Resident Evil (2026) the highest opening for the franchise it also marked the best weekend debut for director/co-writer Zach Cregger.
That’s becoming a trend for Cregger, whose first film Barbarian started its 2022 run with $41 million. His follow up, Weapons, opened in 2025 with $45 million. Resident Evil (2026) sets the new personal best for Cregger, whose stock is clearly on the rise.
Resident Evil (2026) currently has 96% on Rotten Tomatoes and has a solid B+ CinemaScore so the $75 million film should start earning a profit by next weekend.
Practical Magic 2 fell to second place adding another $12 million to its $30 million opening for a total of $49 million.

In third place was Spider-Man: Brand New Day with $6.5 million for its eighth weekend. That just adds to Brand New Day’s all-time highest domestic total of $944 million, which bested Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ $936 million, earlier this week. Lucasfilm

Worldwide, Brand New Day has safely secured the third highest grossing film with $2.45 billion behind Avatar ($2.9 billion) and Avengers: Endgame ($2.5 billion).
Coming in at fourth place was The Odyssey tacking on another $5 million to its $609 million domestic haul and a total worldwide tally of $1.72 billion.
Coyote vs Acme completed the Top 5 with $4.3 million to take its domestic total to $54.6 million proving Ketchup Entertainment made a savvy move in securing the film rights from Warner Bros. after the studio opted to shelve it for a $30 million write off.
