Trial of the Amazons #1

Trial-of-the-Amazons-1

Most of this Wonder Woman event is spent establishing the key players in what’s shaping up to be a political drama with some action elements.
That doesn’t make for the most thrilling entry point for newcomers intrigued by the notion of a big Amazon event.

Queen Nubia welcomes Queen Faruka of the Bana-Mighdall tribe. Yara Flor and her Esquecidas tribe arrive as well with the intent to have one of their tribe wanting the right to stand guard at Doom’s Doorway.

The issue is written by the creative teams of the various Wonder Woman family books with Vita Ayala, Stephanie Williams, Becky Cloonan & Michael W. Conrad and Joelle Jones.

That’s a lot of writers juggling a large cast. Naturally some elements slip through the cracks like the lack of interaction with Donna Troy and Cassie Sandsmark.

There’s some strong elements here like Faruka quickly asserting her authority. It’s interesting that the three Amazonian tribes are led by POCs.
Laura Braga, Skylar Partridge, Elena Casagrande and Jones share art duties. The issue doesn’t seem so large that it needs this many artists, but the pages look fine beyond the awkward transitions from artist to artist.

Jordie Bellaire and Romulo Fajardo Jr. handle the colors, which are vibrant and appealing.

Since no event has meaning without the death of an established character the issue ends with an apparent assassination. Writers have made death so meaningless — Wonder Woman just returned from a long cheating death adventure — that it’s hard to get too worked up about it now.

This issue was mostly setting up the tribe dynamics. It needed a bit more substance beyond the final page, but it should be interesting to see how the fallout of that death.
