Marvel Legends Nemesis Age of Apocalypse Build A Figure review (2025)

With Nemesis, we get another figure from the Age of Apocalypse — a section of the Marvel Legends collection that still could use a slew of figures despite two full waves and a pair of deluxe figures. Unfortunately, the ML squad’s focus has been scattered with this subset with some offerings better suited for their eXiles run and others for the Uncanny X-Force storyline when they traveled to the Age of Apocalypse world.

Nemesis is part of the latter, which is slightly annoying since Apocalypse’s main horsemen, Holocaust, needs an updated figure from his 2007 release. This character is actually Genocide, who the Apocalypse-influenced Archangel used to slaughter millions.

Let’s see if Nemesis delivers the good or needs to wait for the impending apocalypse in the back of the display.

Packaging: While BAFs don’t get their unique packaging outside of the reference on every package in their respective waves, it would still be cool to have some sort of bio write up for him explaining his powers, allies and enemies.

Likeness: This is a pretty strong likeness to Genocide/Nemesis per Jerome Opeña‘s artwork. The costume details are very well implemented from the various sculpted panels and mechanical piping of his armor.

My favorite part of the figure is the haunting skull encased in the translucent helmet with a fairly source material accurate collar piece surrounding the dome. It makes Nemesis look terrifying.

The armor also has some texturing to show some damage with various scrapes and dents throughout. This is welcome detail so Nemesis doesn’t look like he’s pristine and just rolling out a freshly minted suit of armor.

His left arm is nearly filled covered in armor save some sleeker padded material around his forearm leading to a gloved fist. Nemesis has a massive cannon for his right arm with fantastic, detailed panels, knobs and vents. There is a translucent yellow orange tube that attaches to the cannon and either of the ports on his back.

Based on how fidgety some of the capes connect with Marvel Legends figures, I assumed super glue was going to be a must, but it actually stays in place pretty well when handling the arm cannon.

Scale: An average Marvel Legends figure comes up to the midsection of his chest. The X-Force squad wasn’t full of giants so he’s a bit taller than Wolverine, Psylocke and Fantomex.

Paint: The paintwork is another area where Nemesis truly shines. His armor is mostly a rusty shade of burnt orange with a deep orange yellow that has a slight bit of sheen to it.

Those colors contrast nicely with the grey black ribbed paneling section. I’m kinda torn if Nemesis needed any shading or a dark wash to his skull. Most of the coloring in the comic gave his eyes a bit of a yellow glow to showcase the fire around his neck.

It’s one of those deals where some small LED lights strung along the inside of the dome could better illustrate that comic look than paint especially with the dome cast in a translucent shade of burnt orange as well.

Articulation: For a character that largely battles from a distance, Nemesis gets a surprising amount of articulation.

His design makes it seem like he’d be limited in this category, but his range of movement is impressive. Nemesis is able to strike deep elbow poses and can hit a resting one-knee stance.

The designers also gave him better than expected range with his ball-jointed torso allowing him to rare back or lean forward more than he would appear.

Due to his design, he’s a bit too heavy, but pushing his torso back a bit and turning his hip joints slightly will provide a stable display stance without fear of him toppling the figures on the shelf.

The one area I wish was easier to setup for poses is his head. Nemesis’ helmet isn’t too tough to remove, but it’s enough effort to consider how expressive you want to position his skull.

Accessories: Most Build-A-Figures don’t come with accessories. Nemesis barely avoids that fate as he’s got an alternate grasping hand. He’s not the kind of character with obvious extras since an alternate head sculpt wouldn’t matter and his right arm is a cannon so the gesture of throwing something in was appreciated.

Worth It? To get Nemesis, you’d need to pick up six figures at $25 each give or take with tax. That’s a bit over $150, which would be a high price for any collectors that just wanted Nemesis. Fortunately, this X-Men focused wave was one of the stronger BAF lineups in a while with two additional figures — Gambit and Nightcrawler — having ties to Age of Apocalypse themselves.

Rating: 9.5 out of 10

Nemesis is a really well-executed figure off of a somewhat complicated design. The only areas Hasbro could have improved on this great figure was the ease of moving the head and conveying some of the flames around his skull.
